Geroulanos studied medicine in Zurich, Vienna and Paris and became Professor of Surgery at Zurich University in 1989. From 1997 to 2007 he was Professor of History of Medicine at the University of Ioannina, Greece. His passion for history, Greek poetry and numismatics, led him to organize in Vienna (2004-2005) the exhibition Coins and Poetry. The Greek Poet Konstantinos Kavafis (1863-1933), which featured many of Kavafis’ historical poems in their original Greek, accompanied by coins from Classical Antiquity representing persons and events mentioned in these emotional poems. In 2005, Geroulanos was appointed President of the International Hippocratic Foundation, based in Kos Island, Greece. Since then, the Foundation has undertaken a total renovation and has become a venue for international meetings and conferences devoted to the history of medicine. Behind the Foundation building is the Hippocratic garden, featuring the medicinal plants mentioned in the Corpus Hippocraticum.
