Inspiring innovation from tradition

Our Collections are Looking for a New Home

Over the past 50 years, Alain Touwaide, joined by Emanuela Appetiti at some point of his itinerary through research and the world, has assembled a unique library on the history of medicine and science in the ancient Mediterranean World, with a particular focus on botany, medicinal plants, and therapeutics. Since its foundation in 2007, the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions has had the privilege to promote this library and the other documentary collections compiled by Alain and Emanuela, and to make them accessible to scholars and scientists in all disciplinary fields, from all over the world, and at any stage of their career. With time passing, Alain and Emanuela feel that the moment has come for them to pass the torch to the next generation and to transfer their library and all their collections to an institution willing to acquire them, to accrue them as necessary and, more than anything, make them available for future research as they did.

Researchers in the Institute collect material on medical traditions all over the world, and create large interdisciplinary bodies of data on the traditional uses of natural resources, in a great variety of forms: a library collection, a digital library, databases, and images.
