Diseases of the Ancient World
On the basis of written records of medical practice and laboratory analysis of human remains, and in collaboration with a consortium of extra-mural research centres, the Institute makes detailed analysis of available evidence to propose plausible diagnoses of the medical conditions that affected the populations in the Ancient World.
Epidemiology of Antiquity
Building on the analysis of a broad range of single medical conditions over a long period of time and in a vast area, research in the Institute aims to contribute to the reconstruction of the big picture of the geographic distribution of diseases and their possible interaction, as well as their dynamic evolution across time and space in the Mediterranean area from the first human settlements to the discovery of the New World.
