Entitled Secrets from the Past: From Ancient Texts to Modern Medicine, the seminar presented by Alain Touwaide for the Smithsonian Resident Associate Program will show how the knowledge of the curative properties of plants circulated and was transmitted across generations and countries, throughout the Mediterranean basin.

6:45 to 7:45 p.m. From Ancient Books to Modern Science

How knowledge of medicinal plants was transmitted from classical antiquity to the age of printing; the daily exercise of physicians who added the results of their own practice.

8 to 9 p.m. Medicine from the Past

What ancient medicinal plant manuals tell us and how this knowledge can be repurposed in contemporary research as a source for new discoveries.
