Inspiring innovation from tradition

Touwaide has been the recipient of the First Prize of the 1975 National Contest for the Best Degree Thesis (Classical Philology) and of the First Prize of the 1977 National Contest for Travel Grants (Classical Philology) awarded by the Belgian Ministry of Education; the Triennial De Jonckheere Prize for the History of Medicine of the Academy of Medicine in Belgium in 1977; the First Prize of the Annual Contest of the Academy of Letters of Fine Arts in Belgium in 1999; the Award for Achievement in Behavioral and Social Sciences of the Washington Academy of Sciences in 2003; and the Medal for Achievement in Scientific Research of the University of Messina, Italy, in 2008. Touwaide has also been elected to the rank of Fellow of the International Academy for the History of Pharmacy (1991), the Washington Academy of Sciences (2003), the Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti in Messina, Italy (2006, Corresponding Fellow), the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Section on History and Philosophy of Science (2009), the Royal Society of Medicine (2011, Overseas Fellow) and, a Honorary Member of the Accademia di Storia dell'Arte Sanitaria (2012). More recently, he has been the recipient of the Edward Kremers Award (2019), and of the George Urdang Medal (2023), both awarded by The American Institute for the History of Pharmacy (AIHP).
