In his publications Alain Touwaide studies the plant and drug lore of the ancient Mediterranean world: botany (with botanical illustration), medicine (including illnesses and epidemiology), pharmaco-therapeutics (together with toxicology and cosmetics) and therapeutics (comprising of theories on methods for the development of medicines). Not only does he search, study and catalogue the Greek manuscripts containing treatises related to these disciplines, but also he analyzes the most relevant ones in these fields, mainly the Corpus Hippocraticum, Dioscorides, and Galen, as well as medieval and more recent treatises. His dynamic approach follows the transmission and transformation of knowledge through the whole Mediterranean area, from Classical Antiquity to Byzantium, the Arabic world, the Renaissance and beyond, including its reception in classical scholarship up to the 21st century.
